Projection mapping and audio visual equipment for The Big Game in Atlanta

Jordan Goodfellow • Aug 01, 2019

GigRent was proud to provide projection mapping for buildings involved with “The Big Game” in Atlanta. One of those buildings, The Westin Hotel in downtown, was used as a canvas to display the Lombardi trophy.

Projection mapping, a cutting-edge technique, uses everyday video projectors to map light onto any surface. Projection mapping allows you to turn common objects of any 3D shape into an interactive display. More formally, projection mapping is “the display of an image on a non-flat or non-white surface.” Projection mapping is the process of projecting an image or video, large or small, onto an object that is not a standard size. In order to project onto The Westin Hotel, which has a curved surface, different beam lengths need to be taken into account. Multiple audio visual projectors are used for one image and software is used to compensate for the curved surface, ensuring that the image appears correctly.

Mad Mapper was the projection software that GigRent used for this specific project. Mad Mappers allows users to upload shapes, textures, and images into the software, which enables the software to determine how many projectors are being used and where they are located. Then the software determines which projectors are actually shooting on the surface and which are sending the image to the surface you want to move. The software will digitally manipulate the video or the image to compensate accordingly. The projection for “The Big Game” was a still image, but required coordination between multiple projectors to sync and maintain the integrity of the image.
